At Bodify, we frequently receive inquiries from concerned parents regarding the suitability of CoolSculpting for their adolescent children. These parents reach out to us via calls and emails, seeking clarification on whether CoolSculpting is a safe and effective option for individuals under the age of 18. Their inquiries stem from a genuine desire to address their children’s concerns about body image and confidence, understanding the challenges that young individuals may face when dealing with stubborn pockets of fat. As advocates for health and wellness, we recognize the importance of providing accurate information and guidance to parents navigating such decisions for their children’s well-being.
Kids & CoolSculpting, Is It Safe? How Old Do You Have To Be For CoolSculpting?
Although CoolSculpting is a safe procedure for people of any age, CoolSculpting should not be done on those younger than 18.
The reason is simple, up until 18 years, your body is still making, yes making, fat cells! That means when you are 17, you have more fat cells than when you were 12.
Once you turn 18, you no longer make fat cells. Your diet and exercise choices expand or shrink the ones you have.
This is one of the reasons childhood obesity is such a concern. A child who is overweight or obese will have more fat cells to “keep in check” than an average or thin child, which can position them to struggle with their body composition.
CoolSculpting does not shrink a fat cell. It uses temperatures ranging from -9 to -11 degrees Celsius to put a percentage of fat cells, in the treated area, into apoptosis, just a fancy word for cell death. The fat cells die over 2-3 days, and you flush them out of your body through urine or waste over 1-4 months. Once the fat cells are gone, they are gone for good. The results are beautiful and lasting.
However, suppose you do CoolSculpting on a younger individual still making fat cells. In that case, results may not be appreciated long term as that individual still has a body that can make more fat cells.
We love and appreciate that parents care about their children and how they feel in their bodies. And we also hope parents feel compelled to talk to their children about healthy eating and exercise. These conversations often lay the foundations of how men and women think about their bodies, how they eat, if they exercise, and a slew of other choices and emotions regarding their bodies.
There are so many great programs out there to help parents speak with their kids, teach them about nutrition and macro-nutrients, inspire them to be active (for parents to join, too), and have real-world conversations to stack the chips in their favor or having a healthy relationship with food, exercise, and their body.
CoolSculpting is perfect for those over 18 who struggle to get the changes in their body they want. Most of our clients eat well and are active. However, they have one or two trouble spots that seem never to shrink, regardless of their efforts.
CoolSculpting can eliminate those hard-to-reduce areas that seem to plague us after childbirth, as we age, and for various other reasons. CoolSculpting is not for weight loss. It’s for spot reduction.
Consider the Psychology of CoolSculpting for Younger Patients
While CoolSculpting offers an innovative solution for spot reduction in adults struggling with stubborn fat pockets, it’s important to understand the physiological factors that come into play when considering the procedure for younger individuals. The human body undergoes significant changes during adolescence, including the production of new fat cells. Until the age of 18, the body continues to generate fat cells, which can influence the long-term effectiveness of CoolSculpting in younger individuals. Unlike adults, whose fat cell count stabilizes after reaching adulthood, adolescents may still experience fluctuations in fat cell production. Therefore, undergoing CoolSculpting at a younger age may not yield the same lasting results as it would in adulthood.
Parents must engage in open dialogues with their children about healthy lifestyle choices, including nutrition and physical activity, to instill lifelong habits that promote overall well-being. While CoolSculpting remains a viable option for adults seeking targeted fat reduction, its not suitable for children.
