It’s that time of year again. The time when we sit down and consider what we did last year and determine what goals we have for the upcoming year. But writing down those objectives is just part of it. How are you going to keep your New Year’s resolutions?
Could this be the year that you are able to stick to your guns? We’re providing you with 6 tips to help you keep those resolutions and win 2020.
1. Plan Ahead
As with any goals, it’s always good to think of them ahead of time. Writing down your New Year’s resolutions at 11:50 pm on December 31 is probably not the best time. After all, the likelihood is that you’ll have a drink or two in you, you’ll already be a little stressed, and you might not make smart choices.
Even if you’re getting a late start on your resolutions, give yourself the time you need to really plan. What’s doable for you? Do you have a burning desire that you really want to accomplish this year?
With a little thought, you’ll likely think up some goals that resonate with you and will help you stay on track.
2. Be Realistic
If your goal is to lose 100 pounds in two months, you probably won’t get there. Sorry, but we’re just being realistic. And that’s what you need to do in creating your 2020 goals. Why not readjust that to 10 pounds in two months, which is much more within reach? If your big goal really is 100 pounds (or something just as cumbersome), you can chunk it down. Keep reading below on that idea!
Likewise, if you want to save millions of dollars or travel the world this year, that’s awesome, but is it realistic? If it’s not, and you don’t have steps pointing you in the right direction, you’ll lose your focus pretty quickly.
3. Create Milestones
With any large goal, it’s a smart idea to break it up by creating milestones. As the saying goes: How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. By setting up milestones, you can create those “bites” that help you achieve the larger goal.
When you write down your New Year’s resolutions, it’s fine to have an overarching goal. But if it’s larger, create mini goals as well. If you want to save $5,000 this year, perhaps you can divide that into 12 so you know how much to save monthly. And if that’s too big, cut it down to weeks or days. Skipping one latte a day throughout the year can add up to big savings. Before you know it, you’ll have that money in your account!
4. Track Results
It should come as no surprise that what gets measured improves. Ignorance is certainly not your friend when it comes to creating—and achieving—goals. As you create your New Year’s resolutions, give yourself a way to track what you’re doing. Only with tracking can you shed light on what is and make positive changes.
Tracking can be as easy as keeping a journal. There are also numerous apps that will help you track activities, food, budgets, or anything else you want to keep tabs on. When you set your goals, you’ll have numbers attached, and watching those numbers change through tracking will keep you moving forward.
5. Allow for Flexibility
Everyone has days that don’t go as intended. We get sick (or the kids do). There are vacations. You get busy one evening and eat something that’s not on your nutrition plan. Things happen.
One of the biggest gifts you can give yourself in 2020 is to forgive yourself when you mess up. Create a little flexibility in your goal setting. One day isn’t going to trash everything you’re working for. There’s always tomorrow.
6. Celebrate the Wins
Everyone loves recognition. When you reach your milestones, celebrate. When you’re able to save that few dollars you were going to spend on something you don’t need, celebrate. As you say “no thank you” to dessert, celebrate. There are plenty of reasons every single day to celebrate your wins. It can even be as simple as being grateful for that day, no matter what happened. Little wins result in much bigger wins and a positive, can-do attitude.
